Senior Optics Design Engineer
About Serstech
Serstech develops handheld Raman spectrometers, which are used by law enforcement and first responders to identify narcotics and other hazardous chemicals. The instruments are slightly larger than a mobile phone and contains highly sophisticated optics and software. Serstech is the only manufacturer of handheld Raman instruments in the European Union and customers include United Nations and World Customs Organization. Production of Serstech’s products is done in Sweden by a third-party manufacturer.
Currently, the R&D-team consists of 20 people, covering competences from algorithm, optics, firmware and application development to solution specialists and quality assurance.

About the role
As a Senior Optics Design Engineer at Serstech, you will play a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and verifying optics for Serstech’s handheld Raman spectrometer. The challenge lies in fitting a high-performance spectrometer into a compact, handheld device designed for mass production. In this role, you will drive the design, implementation and verification process, ensuring that the optics meet market requirements in terms of performance, usability, and quality.
Your responsibilities will include collaborating closely with various teams within our development department, working with our production partner, and continually assessing potential component suppliers. We encourage innovative thinking and value out-of-the box solutions as key drivers of our success.
Requirements
The successful candidate must have
- A degree in engineering physics or related field
- More than five years of experience in optics design
- Experience in spectroscopy
- Experience from using Zemax, preferably at an expert level
- Experience in analyzing and designing corrections for complex tolerance chains
- A deep understanding of, and a profound interest in technology
- A hands-on, collaborative, unpretentious and open mindset
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken
The successful candidate should have
- Expertise in optimizing components and designing optical paths in Raman spectrometers
- Skills in advanced testing and root cause analysis
- Experience in programming test systems and prototyping (considered an advantage)
